Moving South: The rise of Christchurch as a prime destination

It’s no secret that Christchurch is emerging as a top destination for those relocating from other parts of New Zealand. This migration is fueled by the city’s appeal as a place that offers an excellent quality of life, affordable housing, and a strong sense of community. Not to mention, Christchurch was recognised as one of the world’s top 10 cities people want to move to.

We understand this more than most. We recently opened our Assemble Christchurch office, with two key recruiters, Amy and Sam, relocating from our Auckland office. We thought we would share a few of our insights on why this is such a great city.

As recruiters in the Property, Construction and Infrastructure sector, it’s only natural we start with the city's construction boom. There are considerable and ongoing developments in the city, the long term plan for Christchurch City Council outlines a spend of $6.1billion on capital projects over the next 10 years. Extending development beyond infrastructure to include cultural and community initiatives that enhance the quality of life for residents.

Key current and recent development projects include:

- Te Kaha - the new stadium being built right in the heart of the city that will have capacity for 36,000 event goers.

- Parakiore Recreation & Sports Centre - destined to be the largest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure center in NZ.

- Te Pae - completed in 2022 is a $450m conference facility capable of hosting major conferences/events for up to 2000 people.

The regeneration efforts post the 2011 earthquakes have transformed Christchurch into a modern, resilient city with a blend of historic charm and contemporary amenities.

Naturally, these developments create jobs, with career-defining opportunities on offer that make Christchurch an attractive destination for professionals seeking career advancement without sacrificing lifestyle quality.

Christchurch's housing affordability compared to other major cities like Auckland and Wellington is a major drawcard. This affordability, combined with comparable professional salaries, makes it an attractive option for those looking to improve their standard of living.

Adding to these drawcards is the city’s family-friendly environment, community spirit, the availability of green spaces, outdoor activities, and exceptional healthcare and educational institutions.

The team here at Assemble Christchurch made the move, and we can see why others do too. If you're contemplating a move, Christchurch could be the perfect place to start your next chapter. Give Amy or Sam a call to help you find the perfect Christchurch-based opportunity.
